When I found out that the public memorial service for Ronnie James Dio was scheduled for Sunday May 30th, it was a no brainer for me that I would be there. I was already scheduled to fly into Los Angeles on Friday the 29th to photograph the Armored Saint show, and although I had booked a flight back to San Francisco the following morning, I decided to extend my trip for a few days to pay my respects. I am so glad I did.
As you probably know by now, I like to keep this blog as word free as possible and use it more as an outlet for my photography. But after witnessing first hand the incredible amount of love and respect everyone had for Ronnie, I couldn't help but write about what a truly amazing experience I had. I have decided to let my friend Umlaut host what I have written, and you can read my thoughts on the memorial service HERE.
I was able to obtain a press wristband, and of course took a handful of pictures. But like I said in my piece, for me the memorial was more about being there as a fan rather than a photographer, so I really tried to keep my shooting at a minimum. What I took were more snapshots than anything else, and you can see a few at the bottom of this post. Please excuse the poor quality.
Rest In Peace Ronnie. You were a true legend that touched the lives of countless people. A tower of stone has taken you straight to the sky.

I was there, in the 5th row right center, right behind Vinny Appice. It was amazing. I flew all the way from Richmond, VA to LA. I'll never forget it.
